After being involved in the early fighting at Ypres in August, 1917, 7th East Kent (Buffs) of 55 Brigade, 18th Division, would have been relieved to get away from the dangers of the front line, when they went by train to a camp at St Jan ter Biezen to the west of Poperinghe on 23rd September, 1917. But the war came to them during the night of 28th-29th September when a German plane dropped 6 bombs onto the huts and tents of the camp killing 27 members of the battalion and wounded a further 66. One of those who lost their lives in this incident was William Stockwell. |
